Hotel and resort interiors

By the WuDesign workshop, Thottakkadu · Photographs are of our own work · Updated 6 September 2026

In short

  • Jaali and decorative screens, lobby and reception panelling, ceilings, carved doors, restaurant and spa joinery.
  • Signage, entrance boards, room numbers and wayfinding, cut and lettered in wood rather than printed.
  • Batch work is the point: sixty rooms come off one drawing, so room sixty matches room one.
  • Kerala-wide, from a workshop in Kottayam district.

A resort has a problem an ordinary house does not: it needs the same thing many times. Sixty room numbers, forty screen panels, a hundred feet of the same moulding down a corridor. Made by hand, one at a time, over months, they drift - and a guest walking a corridor is shown every one of them in a row, which is exactly the condition under which drift is visible. This is what a CNC is genuinely for. One drawing, one setup, one run, and the last piece is the first piece.

The work we are asked for in hospitality is screens and light: pierced jaali between a lobby and a restaurant, a ceiling that breaks up a flat span, a carved entrance door, panelling behind a reception desk. Then the lettering - an entrance board, villa and cottage names, room numbers, spa and restaurant signs, cut and engraved into solid timber or a live-edge slab rather than printed on acrylic. The resort signboard below is ours.

We are used to working to an architect's or a project manager's drawings and to a handover date, and we quote itemised so a purchase department can read it. Send the drawings, or the mood board and the areas, and tell us the opening date first - everything else plans backwards from that.

Nameboards and Signs

  • House nameboard

    House nameboard

The number and the name of the house, raised clear of the board and weather-finished.

    Teak

  • Family nameboard

    Family nameboard

A round board for the porch wall, the family's names raised and the leaves picked out.

  • Resort signboard

    Resort signboard

Raised lettering and a cut logo on solid boards, sized to be read from a road rather than from a desk.

    Teak · Maram Resort, Mamalakandam

  • Live-edge nameplate

    Live-edge nameplate

A cross-section slab kept exactly as it came off the log, with the lettering raised out of it.

Doors, Screens and Ceilings

  • Pierced ceiling screen

    Pierced ceiling screen

A ceiling panel cut right through and sprayed white. The pattern is drawn to the room it goes in.

  • Star jaali panel

    Star jaali panel

A repeating star lattice cut clean through, for a partition or a ventilator. The pattern is set out so no cut lands on a short grain.

  • A carved entrance door

    A carved entrance door

Two leaves carved top to bottom, hung on a house. The centre stile, the beading and the panels are all cut on one setting, so the pattern runs through the join instead of stopping at it.

    Teak

  • A panelled wall

    A panelled wall

Grooved boarding run the length of a room, with a carved rail and turned brass rosettes breaking it at chair height.

Fittings, Furniture and Mouldings

  • Carved moulding lengths

    Carved moulding lengths

Long carved lengths laid out to check the run before they go up.

  • A batch of ornament

    A batch of ornament

The same ornament repeated as many times as a job needs, all identical.

Questions we are asked

Can you handle a whole property, or only pieces?

Both. We have cut single signboards and we cut in batches for runs of rooms. Tell us the scope and the opening date and we will tell you honestly what we can carry and by when.

Do you work to an architect's drawings?

Yes, and we prefer to. Send DXF or PDF; if a detail will not hold in the material specified we say so before cutting, not after.

What about outdoor signage in Kerala weather?

For anything exposed we use WPC, PVC foam board or a properly finished hardwood rather than MDF, which will not survive a monsoon on an outside wall. We will tell you which we would use where.

Can you match a theme or a traditional Kerala pattern?

Yes. Send photographs of the reference - a temple screen, an old house, a pattern from your brand - and we redraw it to your panel sizes and show you the drawing first.

Do you invoice against a purchase order?

Yes. Quotes are itemised in writing so they can be checked line by line, and we work to stage payments against a purchase order.

Which areas do you cover?

All of Kerala. The workshop is at Thottakkadu in Kottayam district, within reach of Kumarakom, Alappuzha, Thekkady, Munnar and Kochi.
