Church interiors in Kerala

This is the work the workshop was built around, and the thing worth saying first is not a claim - it is an address. A complete set of fourteen carved stations hangs in the nave at Nalkodi Church, in Kottayam district, and it can be seen whenever the church is open. A committee should go and stand in front of it. Ten minutes there tells you more than any photograph on any website, ours included.

The whole sanctuary is drawn as one thing, because that is how it is seen. Altar and madbaha, the screen or reredos behind it, the ambo and the celebrant's chair, the credence table, the communion rail, the tabernacle door, the stations down both walls, and the panelling and ceiling that hold them together. Relief depth is chosen from your wall and your light, measured on site, because a panel that reads beautifully at ten in the morning can go flat by four.

A large part of the work is in older churches, where nothing is being started from nothing: a panel is split, a section of cresting is missing, half a rail has gone. We take a sample or a close photograph and match profile, depth and polish, so the repair disappears into what is already there. Everything is machined and finished at Thottakkadu and only fitted on site, around the Mass timings you give us.
