Relief panels: the life of Christ, and Marian subjects

By the WuDesign workshop, Thottakkadu · Photographs are of our own work · Updated 5 September 2026

In short

  • Single relief panels, drawn for your wall before anything is cut.
  • The Last Supper, the Descent, the Ecce Homo, the Immaculate Heart.
  • The same panels are made at house size, not only for churches.

A single panel carries a whole devotion, so it is drawn before it is cut. The drawing goes in front of the vicar and the committee, and the machines are not switched on until it is signed.

These are the subjects we are asked for most often: the Last Supper, the Descent from the Cross, the Ecce Homo, the Immaculate Heart. They are cut in teak, at the size the wall asks for. The same panels go into houses as readily as into churches - one of the Last Supper reliefs on this site is photographed along the wall of an old Kerala house, not in a nave.

The Life of Christ

  • The Last Supper

    The Last Supper

The institution of the Eucharist. The standard subject above or behind an altar.

  • The Descent from the Cross

    The Descent from the Cross

Christ taken down, with the ladders still standing. Cut deep and finished dark.

  • The Last Supper, in a house

The same panel run long along the wall of an old Kerala house, above the dining table.

  • Christ, in a roundel

    Christ, in a roundel

Cut deep enough that the face still holds its own shadow from the back of a nave. Photographed before the finish went on.

  • Christ crowned with thorns

    Christ crowned with thorns

An oval relief, hands folded. The crown is undercut so the thorns throw a shadow of their own rather than being drawn on with a shadow line.

Marian Subjects

  • The Immaculate Heart of Mary

    The Immaculate Heart of Mary

A half-length panel, the heart held at the breast. Carved for a house as often as for a church.

Questions we are asked

Can you carve a panel from a picture we already have?

Yes. Bring a photograph or a holy card and we redraw it to your wall size, then machine and hand-finish the panel.

How large can a single relief panel be?

Panel size is set by the wall, not by the machine. Larger pieces are cut in sections and jointed so the grain runs through.

Can a church panel be made for a house?

Yes. One of the Last Supper reliefs on this site hangs along the wall of an old Kerala house rather than in a nave.

Do we see a drawing before you cut?

Always. Scaled drawings and a 3D visualisation go to the committee first, and nothing is machined until the drawing is signed.

Ask about this
